Bucky grew up in Brooklyn along with the scrawny small Steve Rogers. The 2 became string bonded friends, with Bucky sometimes looking out for Steve who always stood up to what he thought was right. Bucky had even offered Steve to stay with him and his family after Steve's mother had passed away.
When the 2nd World War had broken out in Europe, Bucky and Steve had both enlisted. In 1942, Bucky found out that he would become a part of the 107th, but, Steve continued to get rejected for service because of his physical ailments. The night just before Bucky shipped out, he wanted to hang out with his best friend and a pair of ladies at the Stark Expo. Bucky stayed with the women when Steve decided to attempt one last time to try and get into the Army, which gained the attention of Dr. Erskine which lead to Steve's transformation into Captian America.
While fighting overseas, Bucky and several of his fellow soldiers in the 107th had been captured by a HYDRA unit. As their prisoner, Bucky had been experimented on by the HYDRA scientist Arnim Zola, that is until Steve, going against his orders, rescued Bucky and other soldiers. The pair had encountered, for the first time, the Red Skull during their escape. Once they had arrived back at the Allied base, Bucky started a cheer for his friend.
Bucky had passed along some valuable information about HYDRA's facilities that, combined with what Steve saw, gave them a pretty clear plan of attack in order to take out the HYDRA bases. Working along with the Howling Commandos, Bucky and Steve had taken out many of the bases, with Bucky's sharpshooting skills which saved Steve during a mission.
On the mission that was to take Arnim Zola from a HYDRA train, Bucky was knocked through a hole that was in the side of the train during a battle with HYDRA soldiers. Steve tried to reach him to pull him back in, but sadly Bucky lost his grip before he could be saved, which then was shown him plummeting to his apparent death. Steve mourned deeply over the loss of his old friend, as he assumed he was dead. But in actual fact, Bucky luckily survived the fall thanks to the experimentation Arnim Zola had performed on him, and it was HYDRA that would make use of the man who ended up becoming the Winter Soldier.
Bucky had started out as an extremely well-trained soldier for the United States Army. But, when HYDRA got their hands on him, they brainwashed him and gave him an extremely strong cybernetic left arm and trained him to be a killing machine at their will. Bucky ends up going head-to-head with Captain America, Black Panther and Black Widow, using everything he had from his fists, knives, traditional firearms to high-tech grenade launchers, and at a point he even used Captain America's shield.
All thanks to Shuri, she was able to remove his mental programming placed by HYDRA, Black Panther then gifts Bucky a new and updated cybernetic arm in order to fight Thanos's forces.
Apart from all the bullies that had picked on his friend Steve, Bucky's first legit enemies were the Nazis and the Nazi science division that was known as HYDRA. Especially HYDRA's head scientist Dr. Arnim Zola who turned Bucky into the Winter Soldier.
While Bucky was brainwashed, HYDRA sends him after anyone who stood in their way of gaining global control, this included Captain America and his allies The Falcon and Black Widow.
After Captain America helps set Bucky's mind right, Bucky stands along side him in the fight against Helmut Zemo, and also Iron Man and those that were on his side during the split over the Sokovia Accorda. Bucky is targeted by T'Challa, who is Black Panther, who had mistakenly believed that Bucky was the one who killed his father. Iron Man also had strongly retaliated against Bucky after he found out that he Bucky was responsible for killing his parents while under the control of HYDRA, and the fact that Steve kept this information away from Tony.
